the walk up to this feature is quite steep. so those with mobility problems, will not get to the viewing station. For those of us who can to top the view across Windermere is picturesque. A good spot for painting the landscape.

We had a fantastic holiday in the Lake District, and Claife was one of the many places we visited. An unusual building with views over lake Windermere, worth a visit. There is a cafe nearby.

If you are conducting a small scale Lord of the Flies experiment, including throwing hot chocolate willy nilly and mini duels, then this place is entirely unsuitable. Such behaviour would induce any quick thinking customer to order their food 'to go', when this clearly is no take out, and more slow-witted customers to stare helplessly in despair at the 9 year old commandeering the entire table next to them and the 4 year old compulsively touching everything that might break, just to see how long it takes to provoke a response. A cosy, sheepish venue, with rustic food and a quiet atmosphere, but none the less surprisingly tolerant of any chaos you might subject it to.

Just tucked away, the remains of a house built when looking at views was fashionable. A steep little climb offers views through the remains of the big picture windows. An aeolian harp makes a calming humming noise while you enjoy the surroundings. There's the obligatory tea shop too, at the bottom of the hill. It's a short walk from the ferry on the west side of the lake. Good old NT.

It was so beautiful and peaceful at Claife Viewing Station, the views are amazing. Great that they still have a 200 year old piece of history accessible to the public. You have to take the ferry across the lake to get to it on foot but it only costs 50p! You can't beat it. Take a picnic and enjoy the views, Beatrix Potter's House isn't too far from there either!
